Megan was all wriggly in his hold. His hands tightened and he said, “That isn’t all I wanted to say. When I saw you charge for Murphy I had only one thought in my head.”

She grinned at him as he said, “I thought I can’t let the woman I love die today.”

Megan placed her hands on his face and asked, “Does this mean you love me?”

Toa caught her hand and brushed his lips over her fingers. “Yes, Megan. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier. I just wanted to be sure that what I was feeling was real. I didn’t want to hurt you by telling you a lie.” Toa sighed. “I hurt you anyway and I’m sorry for that.”

Megan kissed his lips. “Now we better get out of here before there is another cave in.”

  Megan yelled, “You got it?”

Toa grunted. “Yeah but be quick this thing weighs a ton.”

“Yeah, about that. Maybe a shade less than a ton.” Megan laughed. But she worked quickly to put in place the bolts which would hold the metal rods in place.

It was already attached to the rig which would hold the weather shield plant. They were just attaching the rods now to the anchors on either side of the canyon.

Megan yelled back. “There you can drop it.”

Josh let go and the whole thing twanged as it took all of the weight.

Josh on the other side of the canyon yelled. “All done on this side.”

She smiled. He was still getting used to the atramento. When he had found out the only way he would be allowed into the Oasis Community was to have atramento he had been reluctant. He had been a little more than surprised by the impact of the atramento.

Toa came up to her and wrapped his arms around her. He peered down over the Canyon. “This is just the start.”

Megan smiled at him. “I know. Isn’t it wonderful? With the Shield up this high we should have plenty of land inside the valley.”

“What will you do when you finish building everything? You won’t get itchy feet again.”

She shook her head. “I hope to have kids by then. I think they will keep me grounded. Besides, with all my experience making towers dad has asked me to design some more structures for the Weather Shields. I think that will fill in the rest of my time.”

Toa kissed her cheek. Natia yelled up at them, “Get a room, you two.”

To growled, but she laughed and yelled back, “We have to build it first.”

Megan could just hear their mother scold Natia for bothering them. Toa held her a little closer. She knew when he did things like he meant to say he loved her. He still didn’t use his words very often but it didn’t matter she always felt loved.

  About the Author

Nix Whittaker is a high school teacher in a small rural town tucked away in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand. She immigrated to New Zealand, when she was a young girl, from South Africa and has completely embraced the New Zealand lifestyle.

She has been writing from a young age when she read all the books available for people her age and was forced to write her own just to feed her voracious appetite for Literature.

She got into reading as she had dyslexia and the teacher thought reading would improve her spelling. Frankly, it never did, but it did lead her to a passion for the written word.

She studied at Auckland University, but opted for the quiet life in the rolling countryside and views of Tongariro National Park. She lives with her dog and her three cats and writes between planning lessons and socializing with friends.
